The book chronicles the following year as they live out the vestiges of their youth before she returns to her family at the end of her course. As he awaits her return, his life teeters on the brink of a vortex before he is forced to confront his demons and make life changing decisions. While in essence a comical story of romance in an underbelly of society, the novel deals simultaneously with the diversity of human relationships, politics and dependency as the central character navigates a hedonistic lifestyle with an uncertain fate. The novel is a humorous, fast paced but succinct journey through love, reliance, social justice, the dilemma of learning a foreign language and life and death itself, resolving on the question of whether contentment can come only from pursuing an ideal or whether it can be attained by pragmatism and compromise.
